Welcome to First Year Matters
Welcome to the Computer Science, Software Engineering, Web Development and MIT honours degree courses at Salford University, or to the associated MSc courses.
"First Year Matters" started life as a portal specifically for supporting first year students on Computer Science related courses through their transition from Further Education to Higher Education. It is now a general purpose portal for all students on these courses.
Please feel free to have a look around...
Applicants may be particularly interested in...
- The "Timetables" menu shows you the timetables that our students have in the current year, so you can see the level of attendance that is expected.
The contact time is only part of the time students need to commit, and you should expect to have to put in as much time again for independent study. We believe our timetable has a good balance between support and independence, to give you the potential to succeed in the first year whatever your background.
- The "Assessment Schedules" menu shows you the assessment tasks that our students have to do in the current year, so you see can what workload is expected.
Managing your time is something that is needed if you are to do all of this work to the best of your ability. We will explicity teach you how to do this, and will give you guidance as you go through the course (though by the time you get to the final year you are expected to take more responsibility for managing your own deadlines!)
- The "Course" menu shows you the university's official programme and module documentation for the courses.
This year, as part of the University's quality system, we have had a five-yearly review of all of our programmes. This involves input from staff, students, alumni and employers, to ensure that our courses are up-to-date and that they are evolving in ways that meet industry needs. This has resulted in some new courses being developed and some existing courses being updated. Look at the "Programmes for a 2017 start" menu item to see the full range of courses.
If you have any questions about the courses, or the admissions process, then please email the admissions tutor Andrew Young <A.J.Young@salford.ac.uk>.
